The International Gender and Women's Studies Consortium

WOMEN ACROSS CULTURES

Miami, FL – October 21, 2007 - The Women’s Studies Center at Florida International University on October 11, 2007, signed an international consortium agreement, Women Across Cultures, at the University of Granada, Spain. The consortium involves six universities on five continents. FIU Vice Provost for International Relations, Douglas Kincaid, and Professors Aurora Morcillo (consortium leader), Suzanna Rose, and Ana Maria Bidegain attended the signing. A conference, Intercultural Feminism Without Borders, was held during the same week to launch the consortium.

The Women Across Cultures Consortium will facilitate collaborative international research projects on women and gender, such as Global Women’s Health and Gender and Domestic Violence Across Cultures. Other goals include faculty and student exchanges and curriculum development. The next meeting will be held in Fez, Morocco, in Fall of 2008.

“We intend to learn about the many ways women in the Southern hemisphere define feminism, self-worth, and commitment to human rights through this international consortium. As western feminists, we realize we have a lot to learn from our colleagues in the Third World,” said FIU Professor Aurora Morcillo, co-leader of the consortium project.

“This is an exciting step towards addressing women’s concerns on a global scale,” said
Suzanna Rose, former Director of the Women’s Studies Center at FIU’s South Campus. “FIU faculty and students will now have the opportunity, by working with consortium partners, to conduct research on the health concerns of women in South Africa, domestic violence in Colombia, how tourism affects women’s employment in India, and the influence of religion on women wearing the veil in Morocco, among other topics. Comparative research will be undertaken as well.”

The Consortium is made up of the following six universities Women's Studies Programs:

  • FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY, Miami FL; representatives Prof. Aurora Morcillo & Suzanna Rose
  • UNIVERSIDAD DE GRANADA, located in Granada, Spain; representatives Prof. Margarita Birriel & Lola Sanchez
